Concept of tense

A

ccording to R.Mgude & G.Mhiche (2008):Tenses; English to Swahili,G&R pubrishers.DSM defined tense as any of the verb forms that indicates the time of action as Past, Present or future.

Other stated tense as relationship between time and action.

Kutokana na kitabu cha R.Mgude & G.Mhiche (2008):Tenses;English to Swahili,G&R pubrishers.DSM kimefafanua njeo kama, ni muundo wa kitenzi/vitenzi ambavyo huonesha wakati wa kutenda au kutendewa kama wakati Uliopita, uliopo au ujao.

Wengine wanasema Njeo ni uhusiano uliopo kati ya muda na tendo/tukio.

TENSES DIVISION/MGAWANYO WA NJEO

There are three main parties of tenses/ Njeo imegawanyika katika sehemu kuu tatu

PRESENT TENSE/WAKATI ULIOPO

This tense has four categories;

  i.     Simple present tense/wakati uliopo wa mazoea

ii.     Present continuous tense/
wakati uliopo unaoendelea

iii.     Present perfect tense/
Wakati uliopo timilifu

iv.     Present perfect continuous tense/
Wakati uliopo timilifu unaoendelea

 

I: SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE/WAKATI ULIOPO WA MAZOEA.

v  It is used to explain habitual actions or things which occur every day, every time, weekly, monthly and yearly etc.

v  Hutumika kuelezea tabia ya mazoea au matukio ya mazoea ambayo hutokea kila siku, kila wakati, kila wiki, kila mwezi na kila mwaka na kuendelea.

Changes of verbs in this tense/
Mabadiliko ya vitenzi katika nyakati/Njeo hii.

Ø  Main verbs change by adding “-es” or “-s” at the end when the subject is in third personal singular (He, She, It)
Vitenzi vikuu hubadilika kwa kuongeza“-es” au “-s” mwishoni mwa kitenzi ikiwa mtenda yupo katika nafsi ya tatu umoja.

Ø  Main verbs does not change by adding “-es” or “-s” at the end (remain infinitive form) when the subject is in;
Vitenzi vikuu havibadiliki kwa kuongeza “-es” au “-s” mwishoni mwa kitenzi (Hubaki kama vilivyo asili yao) ikiwa mtenda yupo katika;

Tunacheza mpira wa miguu kila ijumaa.

e)  We learn English every time.
Tunajifunza kiingereza kila wakati.

v  Second personal Singular & plural(you)/Nafsi ya pili umoja na wingi (wewe/nyinyi)

E.g.

a)  You go to church every Sunday.
Unakwenda kanisani kila jumapili.

b)  You feed your goats every time?
Mnalisha mbuzi wenu kila wakati?

c)  You always cut the hair?
Unakata nywele siku zote?

d)  You normally brush the teeth.
Mnapiga mswaki meno kila mara.

e)  You listen to teacher every time.
Mnamsikiliza Mwalimu kila wakati.

 

 

 

 

 

v  Third personal Singular (He, She, It)/Nafsi ya tatu umoja (Yeye wakiume, yeye wa kike, ~nyewe)

E.g.

a)  He usually washes the clothes.
Ni kawaida yake yeye (wa kiume) kufua nguo.

b)  She always cleans their house.
Siku zote yeye (wa kike) husafisha nyumba yao.

c)  Mr.Agripa watches on TV every 08:00 pm
Agrippa huangalia TV kila saa 08:00 pm

d)  It bites us oftenly.
Hutuuma kila mara.

e)  Nicodem teaches Kiswahili in STD seven every year.
Nicodem hufundisha Kiswahili darasa la saba kila mwaka.

v  Third personal plural (They)/Nafsi ya tatu wingi (Wao)

E.g.

a)  They wash their uniform.
Wao hufua sale zao.

b)  They teach us happily forever.
Wao hutufundisha kwa furaha daima.

c)  They catch thieves every market day.
Wao humkamata mwizi kila siku ya soko.

d)  They eat meat every day
Wao hula nyama kila siku.

e)  They irrigate flowers every summer season.
Wao humwagilia maua kila msimu wa kiangazi.

 

 

 

 

 

 

II. PRESENT CONTINOUS TENSE/WAKATI ULIOPO UNAOENDELEA

v  It is used to express the action which is going on present and still in progress.

v  Hutumika kuonesha tendo linalofanyika sasa hivi au linaloendelea kufanyika au kufanywa.

Changes of verbs in this tense/
Mabadiliko ya vitenzi katika nyakati/Njeo hii.

Ø  Main verbs change by adding “-ing” after auxiliary verb (is, are, am) at the end/
Vitenzi vikuu hubadilika kwa kuongeza “-ing” mwishoni baada ya kitenzi kishirikishi(is, are, am).

Ø  “IS” is used in Singular form of Noun or Pronoun/
Hutumika katika hali ya umoja wa nomino au kiwakilishi.
E.g. He is going to town at present.
     Yeye (wa kiume) anakwenda mjini sasa hivi

Ø  “ARE” is used in plural form of Noun or Pronoun/
Hutumika katika hali ya wingi wa nomino au kiwakilishi.
E.g. They are writing English notes now.
     Wao wanaandika nukuu za kiingereza sasa hivi.

III. PRESENT PERFECT TENSE/WAKATI ULIOPO MTIMILIFU

v  It is used to express an action or event that has just been completed and the outcomes or results are visible.

v  Hutumika kuelezea tendo au tukio ambalo tayari limeshafanyika au kutimia na matokeo yake bado yanaonekana.

Changes of verbs in this tense/
Mabadiliko ya vitenzi katika nyakati/Njeo hii.

Verbs change in different ways according to the kind of verb;
There are two types of verbs

  1. Regular verbs/vitenzi vya kawaida
  2. Irregular verbs/vitenzi visivyo vya kawaida


Regular verbs/vitenzi vya kawaida

-Are verbs which (added) ending with “-ed” or “-d” at the end, after change to perfect tense/past participle
-Ni vitenzi ambavyo (huongezwa)huishia na “-ed” au “-d” mwishoni, baada ya kubadilika kuwa katika wakati uliopo mtimilifu.

                                          IV.     PRESENT PERFECT CONTINOUS TENSE/
WAKATI ULIOPO MTIMILIFU UNAOENDELEA

-It used to show an action or event which has been taking place for a period of time and still in progress.

-Hutumika kuonesha tendo au tukio ambalo limekuwa likifanyika kwa kipindi fulani na lingali bado linaendelea.


Changes of verbs in this tense/
Mabadiliko ya vitenzi katika nyakati/Njeo hii.

Main verbs change by adding “-ing” at the end, after auxiliary verb has/have.

E.g.
They have been writing English notice since morning.
* Wamekuwa wakiandika nukuu za kiingereza tangu asubhi.

*Walimu wamekuwa waki tusisitiza kusoma kwa bidii.

d)  Hon. Samia suluhu Hassan has been addressing the nation since two hours ago.
*Mheshimiwa Samia Suluhu Hassan amekuwa akilihutubia taifa tangu masaa mawili yaliyopita.

e)  We have been going to school for seven years now.
*Tumekuwa tukienda shuleni kwa miaka saba sasa.

 

 

NEGATIVE FORM OF PRESENT TENSE/HALI YA UKANUSHI YA WAKATI ULIOPO.

  1. Negative form of simple present tense/
    Hali ya ukanushi ya wakati uliopo wa mazoea
    Form/Muundo.

Subject + Do/Does + Infinitive form of a verb

E.g.

*She does not study hard.
-Yeye (wa kike) hasomi kwa bidii.

*I do not learn Kiswahili every monday.
-Mimi sijifunzi Kiswahili kila jumatatu.

*We don’t go to school every day.
-Sisi hatuendi shuleni kila siku.

*They do not come always.
-Wao hawaji mara kwa mara.

*It doesn’t rain every month.
-Mvua hainyeshi kila mwezi.

-Nyinyi hamchezi mpira wa miguu muda huu.
